Bullying and sexual harassment are rife in many of today’s large businesses and organisations. This fictional story explores the subtle, systemic and pervasive practices that can lead to institutionalised bullying, harassment, racism, sexism and homophobia – and shows how one whistleblowing individual can stand up to a powerful entity and, eventually, make a difference.
After the break-up of her marriage, former lawyer CAREN needs a job in London. Her old law-school friend, the super-ambitious NANCY, fixes her up with an interview at the busy city firm where she is a partner. Caren is offered a position and things go well at first but, before long, she becomes the victim of sexual harassment and bullying at the hands of one of the senior partners, the charming and manipulative GUS (think Donald Trump with an Eton background).
Too worried about losing her job to do anything about it at first, Caren puts up and shuts up. But as time goes by, and she witnesses other blatant discrimination and harassment practices at the firm, she dares to puts her head above the parapet.
Things turn bad immediately, affecting her friendship with Nancy, her confidence and her reputation. When she is eventually fired, Caren hatches a plan for retribution which, in the first instance, makes matters much worse, but finally leads to success. Through it all, she finds a new vocation.
