THEME

In these days of racial, religious and political tension, the themes of tolerance, understanding and forgiveness are in the zeitgeist more than ever. This series offers a canvas for exploring those themes in an engaging, original, fun and yet thought-provoking way.

SYNOPSIS

It’s 1961, just sixteen years after the end of World War II. An extraordinary NATO peace initiative leads to the setting up of a German tank training battalion on a British army base in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales.

Many local residents are incensed. The last thing they want is German tanks rolling through their streets. The young German soldiers are nervous too: how on earth is this crazy scheme going to work? But despite political, national and local opposition, the controversial plans go ahead, throwing a virtual hand-grenade into the very centre of this tight-knit community.
 Pathé news reel here.

The German troops settled and remained at Castlemartin Range for 35 years. Over time, they became an accepted and much-loved part of the community.

TINDERBOX is an ensemble period drama series positioned on both sides of the barbed wire fence, telling fictional stories inspired by the families and individuals who lived through this unique time in European history.
